Memories are Made of This

How to find the right Photographer

To quote the words of an old and dusty ballad '…memories are made of this….', is not to over-stress the importance that your wedding photograph will be to your memory of what is arguably, one of the most important days of your life. So, it's ultra important, that when choosing a wedding photographer, you make sure that you and they are on the same wavelength.

But with a veritable host of good, bad and indifferent photographers out there, all begging for your business and your money, how do you sort the good from the bad and come up with the best?
Well, here are a few simple rules.

Firstly- ask friends, friends of friends and family, about the photographer who immortalized their weddings.

Secondly, have a good look at the pictures that these memory makers produced.

Thirdly- visit photographer's web sites, look at their portfolios and read what they say about their experience and views on taking wedding photographs.

Fourth- make a shortlist of the most promising contenders and pay each one a visit.

When talking to your short listed photographer, consider how you might feel spending a whole day with him or her. Are they the sort of person whose presence would annoy you after one or two hours? Will they blend in with the guests, or will they stick out like a sore thumb, making everyone feel uncomfortable?
Remember, it's going to be a long day and you need to feel at ease with your own, personal paparazzi.

It is important to view entire albums of wedding photos, rather than just a few of the photographer's best shots.
Ask if he or she is comfortable taking reportage style photographs. (Candid, au 'natural photos, taken without the subject posing or necessarily being aware that the photograph is being taken).

Some photographers are not comfortable or practiced at the taking of reportage photographs.

When you have finally chosen your 'artist with the camera', make sure that you stipulate exactly which formal photographs you absolutely must have and who is to be immortalized in them.
